Nauvoo, Ill

Nauvoo Ill is off the beaten path, it is  the city Joseph Smith founded, built a temple and Latter Day Saints flocked to Nauvoo after joining the church.  At the time it was bigger than Chicago. Joseph and his brother Hyrum were Martyred near here and the Mormons packed up and left to save their lives.  Mobs were threatening to destroy all Mormons and the governor even put out a Mormon extermination order so they left and traveled by wagon and handcart to Salt Lake City, Utah, out of the United States at the time in the 1840’s.  Nauvoo is a place of remembering today. It is a Williamsburg-like place where you can see the daily living of people in the 1830’s and 40’s.   Janell and I took my grandsons, Ethan and Sean to Nauvoo for a 2 1/2 day visit.100_1065 100_1064 100_1086 100_1089

Janell turns 20 and works at the zoo

Janell spent the summer at the Omaha Zoo doing an internship at the aquarium working with the penguins. She is monitoring their food by writing down who is fed.  Each penguin has a band on their arm giving it a number.  The feeder yells out the number and Janell writes it down. Penguins are not as cute as they seem.  She has two wounds to prove it and got locked into the giant freezer once.  No big deal when she found the note saying “if you get locked into the freezer……”100_0987 100_0997 100_1020

Kay Anderson’s direct Patriarchal Line

Hans Born 1562  b. Ottestrup, Soro, Denmark

Francis Ellis Anderson 1897     b. Oak City, Millard C. Utah

Francis Lyman Anderson 1928 b. Oak City UT

From 1562 to around 1800 the family remained in the Ottestrup area, Specifically Ottestrup, Vedbynoore (spelled different in the genealogy), Sorterup and Sonderup, which are small villages in Soro on the island of Zealand  Denmark.  Soro is also a not too distant larger city.  I don’t know if it is also something like a county or if they just start with the residence city and list each larger city for reference. ie Oak City, Delta, SLC, Utah, USA. Here are pictures from these villages taken June 2011.

Some time around 1800, Anders Larsen moved to Holbaek about 45 Km North.  We didn’t visit this reasonably large city as it would be too difficult to identify a proximity as we did with the small villages and they moved back to the Soro area before immigrating to America.  If you would like to see Holbaek it can be viewed on google earth at street level.

Jens Andersen, who immigrated to the US was born in Holbaek, however he returned to Soro, Specifically Taarnborg, “Tarnboo” along the western coast of Zealand, Denmark before immigrating.

Anderson Baltic Trip

We are in Copenhagen Denmark.  Kay’s mom and Ben are treating our family to a trip of a lifetime to see the family Farm in Denmark and a Baltic Cruise.  We are on the Cruise right now heading into Stockholm Sweden.

These are some highlights from our one day in Copenhagen.100_0576

Tivoli Gardens is one of the oldest amusement parks in the world.  Walt Disney was inspired by this park as you can see from the pictures.

The Little Mermaid just returned from a trip to China.

We spent one night in Copenhagen before getting on our Baltic Cruise.  We went to the Church of Our lady where Thorvaldsen’s Christus statue and his twelve apostles reside.  Breathtaking.  This Christus statue is the one in several Mormon Church visitors centers.

For the cruise, we sent Ben, Winnifred, RaeLyn and Bryan ahead with all the luggage to the ship and the rest of us took a train to the port and had an unexpected 3 hour walking tour to our ship.  Exhausted we arrived to eat our hearts out.

We went to Stockholm Sweden and visited the Vasa Museum where they have a preserved 1600’s Viking war ship, Skansen living history museum.

In Helsinki Finland we took a city tour ending at a market where we ate Reindeer.   100_0611 100_0608
